Audi Starts A2 e-tron Production in Ingolstadt

Series production of the A2 e-tron is underway in Ingolstadt. First cars left the line after Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder’s September 10 plant visit; Audi’s media release is dated September 11. Paris covered the car. September 10 opened the order books. This piece is the factory story — how Ingolstadt is building Audi’s Europe-focused compact EV.

Twenty-one months faster to production readiness

Audi says development-to-production-readiness ran 21 months shorter than on previous vehicle projects. Prior launch experience and tighter coordination cut pre-series time. The plant is racing a real clock for an entry electric model built in Germany.

CEO Gernot Döllner cast the A2 e-tron as market-back for Europe: developed for the region, built in Ingolstadt, and pitched as the most efficient Audi yet while the company shortens development and lifts production efficiency.

Less complexity, string-of-pearls in Ingolstadt

Fewer production-relevant part numbers mean fewer logistics supermarkets and less floor space. For the first time in Ingolstadt, Audi is running the string-of-pearls sequence already proven in Neckarsulm: the customer-order sequence locks six days before assembly starts and holds across shops. Suppliers can pack in sequence; plant-side storage and sequencing buffers shrink.

Bodies share facilities with the Audi A3 on a flexible layout. More than 1,200 production components — welding guns and around 250 robots used on other Audi models among them — stay in service for the A2 e-tron.

Automation: wheels and bin picking

Fully automated wheel installation arrives in Ingolstadt with this model. Robot stations replace the older semi-automated bolting setup for front and rear axles in chassis preassembly.

In the body shop, bin picking pairs cameras with image processing so robots can lift small sheet-metal parts from disordered containers and feed the next station. Audi sells it as fewer ergonomically hard manual picks — not only raw speed.

Edge Cloud 4 Production and AI assistants

The industrial cloud Edge Cloud 4 Production centralizes the Universal Test System for A2 e-tron control-unit commissioning and “operator guidance” for vehicle customizations. Audi says that removes more than 450 industrial PCs from assembly.

AI knowledge tools are spreading across sites too — a Supply Chain Chatbot for process and documentation look-ups, and a maintenance chat for fault analysis. People stay on the decision; the software is there to get answers to the line faster.

Skills for electromobility on the line

SOP also leans on workforce prep: hands-on modules plus virtual assembly training on screens. Audi calls continuous qualification a core ramp-up factor for new EV tech at the headquarters plant.

For buyers tracking the story: Europe-focused model. German list prices start from €38,200; deliveries begin December 2026. See our Paris unveil recap and orders-open guide for the power/battery ladder and configure notes.
