Audi Model Names Explained: Letters, Numbers, S, RS, e-tron

Spot an Audi on the street and the badge is doing real work. Letters and numbers tell you body height, size class, performance rung, and usually the powertrain. Here is how Audi’s naming system actually reads — brand rules, not forum folklore.

Why the badge matters

Dealers, forums, and classifieds all talk in shorthand: A6 Avant TFSI, Q5 Sportback, RS 6, SQ8 e-tron. Misread the code and you are shopping the wrong car. Audi’s February 3, 2025 nomenclature update locked in one clear rule: the number marks size and positioning worldwide — not whether the car is electric or combustion.

The number series: higher usually means bigger

Audi’s alphanumeric name is a letter (or letters) plus a number. When the 2025 standardization landed, Audi said those numbers — then cited as one through eight — classify size and market position, independent of powertrain.

Enthusiasts still use the old rule of thumb: higher number, larger / more premium slot. A3 under A6. Q3 under Q7. Flagships sit at the top. The full-size Q9 already stretches past the “one to eight” range Audi mentioned in early 2025 — the hierarchy still reads the same way.

Letter prefixes: A, Q, and the special names

Per Audi’s global naming standard:

• A — low-floor vehicles (the classic cars: hatchbacks, sedans, Avants, Sportbacks).
• Q — high-floor vehicles (SUVs and crossovers).

A versus Q is the first read on almost every modern badge. Outside that ladder, Audi has used dedicated names for halo cars — historically the TT coupe/roadster family and the mid-engine R8. Those are not A3–A8 / Q2–Q8 shorthand.

Performance SUVs often put S or RS ahead of the Q (SQ8 e-tron, RS Q8). Same height class. Different intent.

S vs RS (and SQ): the performance ladder

This is where parking-lot arguments start.

• S — real sport derivative of the matching A or Q. More power, sharper chassis. Not stickers alone.
• RS — from German RennSport (“racing sport”). Audi Sport GmbH’s top tier. Audi’s own Sport portrait is blunt: only the sportiest models wear R and RS. RS 3, RS 6 Avant, RS Q8, RS e-tron GT.
• SQ — S treatment on a Q SUV (SQ5, SQ7, SQ8, and so on).

Do not confuse any of that with S line. That is a sport look-and-kit package on mainstream A/Q cars — same engine family as the non-S-line car. If the trunk lid only says “S line,” it is not an S or RS.

Body-style badges you will actually see

After the letter-number combo comes the body word. The 2025 standard calls out Avant, Sedan, and Sportback as examples.

• Avant — estate / wagon.
• Sportback — sloping-roof hatch or coupe-like profile; on Q models, usually a sleeker SUV roofline.
• Sedan — classic three-box (or that line’s current sedan package).
• allroad — raised, cladded, off-road-oriented Avant. Audi’s latest A6 allroad press kit still spells it out: more ground clearance than the A6 Avant, allroad-specific design, adaptive air suspension, quattro standard.

Those words are not trim fluff. They change the silhouette and the cargo story.

How e-tron naming shifted

Electric naming is the chapter that lost people for a few years.

Phase one: Audi’s first volume EV landed in 2018 simply as the Audi e-tron (plus a Sportback). e-tron was the model name.

Phase two: The 2023 update moved that SUV family onto the Q ladder as Q8 e-tron / Q8 Sportback e-tron. Audi’s own materials say the rename parked it as the top electric SUV/crossover in the range. Other EVs already used letter-number + e-tron (Q4 e-tron, e-tron GT, later A6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, and so on).

Phase three (Feb 2025): Audi dropped the odd-number ICE / even-number EV split. Same letter-number pair can now cover combustion and battery cars. Body style plus powertrain code does the separating:

• e-tron — fully electric
• TFSI — petrol
• TDI — diesel
• TFSI e — plug-in hybrid

Audi’s own example: A6 Avant TFSI versus A6 Avant e-tron. Same size class, different powertrain badge. Models already on sale were not renamed retroactively under that announcement.

How to read a badge on the street

Work left to right:

1. Letter — A (car) or Q (SUV), unless it is a special name (TT, R8) or already an S/RS/SQ stack.
2. Number — size class. Bigger digit, bigger / higher slot in that family.
3. Body word — Avant, Sportback, Sedan, allroad if present.
4. Powertrain code — e-tron, TFSI, TDI, or TFSI e.
5. Performance stack — S / SQ / RS means real hardware. S line alone does not.

Example: A6 Avant e-tron is a full-size low-floor wagon that is fully electric. RS 6 Avant is Audi Sport’s high-performance take on that wagon idea with combustion hardware. Q5 S line is a midsize SUV wearing the sport package — not an SQ5.

Parse that string and the four rings stop looking cryptic. The badge is a product map in chrome.
